Consistent with its industry- wide Consultative approach at stakeholders engagement for effective regulatory oversight, the NCC today hosted a Sensitization Workshop on Code of Corporate Governance for the Telecommunications Industry with the Theme: “Telecommunications at the threshold of Data Revolution, the Place of Good Corporate Governance as Enabler for Its Speedy Attainment”.

The Kano edition is the third in the series of the Sensitization workshops by the Commission, across the geopolitical zones.The Code of Corporate Governance for the Telecoms Industry which was introduced in July, 2014 and reviewed in 2016 outlines the minimum Global Best Practice covering processes, procedures and general Corporate behavior for the Telecommunications sector operators.

As the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) acknowledges, “Good Corporate governance provides proper incentives for the board and management to pursue objectives that are in the Interests of the Company and its Shareholders and should facilitate effective monitoring.”

The EVC/CEO of NCC Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta in his opening remarks welcomed everyone present at event, and said the ‘Zonal Sensitization Workshop on the Code of Corporate Governance for the Telecommunications Industry’ for the North-West Zone, geared as the title indicates, towards sensitization and informed enlightenment of the industry stakeholders and the general public of the existence of the code, and to critically draw your attention to the adopted international best practices and principles enunciated therein; and to the fact that the code principles are now mandatory baselines expected to reflect the international features of our industry, which shall be adopted by all operators to which the Code is applicable.

The forum attracted prominent personalities in the persons of NBA President, A B Mahmoud SAN, Prof Munzali Jibrin and Prof Auwalu Yadudu among many others. Other stakeholders of the industry also participated including licensed operators, interested public and experts of the industry.
