E-Health Project

The Data Sharing and e-Health Platform is a Special Intervention Programme implemented by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) under the School Support Programme (SSP) for Tertiary Institutions. Targeted at University Teaching Hospitals across the Country, the initiative is designed to modernize healthcare delivery by deploying robust digital infrastructure and automating critical hospital processes.

The intervention addresses long-standing challenges associated with manual record-keeping, slow administrative procedures, fragmented data systems and delays in patient care. By introducing an integrated Hospital Information Management System (HIMS), the programme creates a unified digital platform that facilitates real-time data sharing across departments from registration and triage to diagnostics, pharmacy, billing and discharge.

Through the provision of high-speed broadband connectivity, servers, network equipment and ICT end-user tools, the platform enhances the hospital’s operational efficiency and strengthens clinical decision-making. It also supports teaching and research activities by ensuring secure access to structured health data needed for academic work, epidemiological surveillance and institutional reporting.

The benefits of this intervention are far-reaching. Patients experience faster and more coordinated care, clinicians gain instant access to accurate medical records and hospitals achieve improved resource management, reduced paperwork and enhanced revenue assurance. The programme also promotes compliance with data protection standards, introduces the foundation for telemedicine services and strengthens the reputation of participating institutions as digitally forward-looking medical centres.

Overall, the Data Sharing and e-Health Platform serves as a transformative step in digital healthcare advancement in Nigeria, equipping teaching hospitals with the tools needed to deliver efficient, transparent and patient-centered services in line with global best practices.
