All Hail Team Tech Vibes, Winner Of 2018 NCC Tennis League
Class and glamour were on parade as Team Tech Vibes featuring current men's champion, Joseph Imeh Thomas Otu, Adehi Ochei, Bala Musa, Aanu Aiyegbusi and Osareme Airhumwhunde recently at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Court defeated team Ofikwu 4- 0 to win the 2018 NCC Tennis League.
It was a colourful grand finale of raw guts and gusto which also was graced by dignitaries including the Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung
Team Ofikwu comprising Sylvester Emmanuel, Christie Agugbom, Henry Atseye, Christian Paul, and Shehu Lawal could not reproduce the brilliant tennis that brought them to the final.
Team Leadway Assurance represented by Babalola Abdulmimun, Clifford Enosoregbe, Albert Bicom, Philip Abayomi and current women champion, Sarah Adegoke came third while Kwara State-based Team Goshen comprising Uche Oparaoji, Emmanuel Sunday, Emmanuel Pau, Joseph Iyorovbe, Musa Bala ,Blessing Samuel and Rachel Adeusi picked the 4th spot.
Promoters of the epic show, NCC, kept its promise as the champions went home with a cash prize of N7 million, second placed team won N5 million while the third and fourth placed teams were rewarded with N3 million and N 2 million respectively.
Declaring the league closed, the Executive Vice Chairman and CEO of NCC, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, stressed that the commission is involved in the competition as part of its corporate social responsibility as well as to invest in activities that can help develop the youths.
He explained that NCC was using the event to foster national unity, adding that staging the preliminaries at different parts of the country and throwing it open to all Nigerians irrespective of religion and ethnic group was a strategy to build a united Nigeria.
"The diversity of the audience and participants here today attests to this", he told the enthusiastic crowd of tennis buffs.
According to him, the aim of NCC is to engage and empower the youths through the game of tennis, take the game to major cities in the country with the aim of attracting and developing sporting talents to raise the skill level of the players through regular competitions and to enable top players through the prize monies and other incentives launch professional careers.
Special Guest of Honour and Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Solomon Dalung while commending NCC for its continuous sponsorship of the tournament, noted that his ministry is always ready to partner and encourage organisations that take the issue of sports development serious even as he appealed to other organisations to emulate NCC and invest in sports .
The 2018 tennis league which ran for more than six months involved all the top male and female players in the country divided into teams to play in all the major cities in round-robin play-offs, quarter- finals and semi-finals culminating with the grand finale in Lagos.
