The Senate yesterday urged the Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobola Johnson, to use Information and Communications Technology (ICT) to tackle terrorism and national insecurity.
Mrs. Johnson was also asked to use ICT to create jobs and wealth for the country.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Communications Gilbert Nnaji gave the advice as the minister defended N18,305,107,488 allocated to her ministry in the 2012 budget proposal.
Nnaji regretted that the contribution of ICT to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is low.
The country, he said, still ranked very low in terms of knowledge creation, penetration of ICT, access to and usage of Internet as well as telephone penetration and physical infrastructure.
He challenged the minister to use ICT to address terrorism and national security and above all, for job and wealth creation.
