Since the advent of civilian administration in 1999, Nigeria is fast
becoming the regional destination for hosting international events,
workshops and conferences.
Under the
auspices of ITU, Nigeria hosted COSITU in 2002 and 2003, Validation
Workshop on Universal Access 2004, and workshop on Rural Access in
2005 in partnership with USAID and EEC to mention but a few. The
country has also successfully hosted several Commonwealth
Telecommunications Organisation (CTO) workshops and conferences, the
last being the one on VOIP in Africa, February 2005.
Similarly,
she hosted the most colorful and the best organised All Africa Games
(COJA) 2003, Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM 2004),
Regional Conference for Education Ministers on the Integration of
ICT in Education in Africa, 2004 and the African Union (AU) Summit,
January 2005 etc.
In all
cases, the government of Nigeria, in a bid to encourage
international travelers and visitors, has done so much to ensure
security of guests.
It is
instructive to note that all these international events Nigeria
hosted have been without any security lapse.
Airport
The airports
in Nigeria have improved substantially in terms of facilities,
security arrangements and smooth logistics. Delegates to RPM -05
will be accorded befitting airport protocols and courtesies.
For
delegates arriving through Murtala Mohammed airport, Ikeja, Lagos
professional protocol personnel would be on hand at the Airport to
receive them and to usher them to the domestic wing. The local wing
is ten minutes from the international Airport.
Overnight
Stay in Lagos
Delegates,
who arrive later than 6.30 pm at the Lagos International Airport,
will spend the night in hotels in Lagos, to catch domestic flight to
Abuja the following morning. Flight time from domestic wing of the
Murtala Mohammed airport, Ikeja, Lagos to Abuja is about one hour.
Movements
In and Around Abuja
Abuja is
generally a safe and peaceful city. There is high but unobtrusive
security presence in and around the capital city. However,
government is taking extra measure to ensure that the venues are
very secure and vehicles are provided for shuttle services for
delegates.
In any
event, delegates are advised to take the usual precautions that are
associated with international travels.
Taxi
Services
In both
Lagos and Abuja airports, car rental services are available. It
costs between $ 25 and $32 to hire airport taxi to any part of the
town. Within Abuja metropolis, it costs not more than $ 4 per taxi
drop, while in Lagos it could range from $5 to $12, depending on
distance and type of taxi. Taxis which are painted in taxi colours
are usually cheaper than those not so painted. In Lagos, taxi
colours are yellow with black stripes, while Abuja is green with
horizontal white stripes. |
