At the World Telecommunication Development
Conference (Istanbul, 2002), participants underlined the need for
greater regional coordination to facilitate a coordinated approach
and to engage members in the WTDC process early on.
In
response to this need, a series of preparatory meetings are being
organized in each of the five ITU regions, one of which is the
Africa Regional Preparatory Meeting which will be hosted by Nigeria. The objective is to adopt appropriate
development strategies at regional and sub regional level, based on
initiatives and projects as well as on questions and topics relevant
to the development requirements and priorities of the countries of
every region.
At this meeting, key ICT stakeholders in Africa
will review developmental needs and priorities of the region,
identify issues that need to be addressed to facilitate rapid ICT
development, including ITU-ATU assistance to NEPAD. In this regard,
Member States will be able to make any relevant proposals on the
contribution expected from the ITU Regional Office in implementing
the projects and initiatives.
The output of each preparatory meeting will be
tabled at a Coordination Meeting to take place in conjunction with
the meeting of the Telecommunication Development Advisory Group to
be held in Geneva from 12 to 16 December 2005. The role of the
Coordination Meeting is to consolidate the coordinated proposals to
be tabled at WTDC-06 in Doha (Qatar) for the preparation of the Doha
Action Plan. This preparatory process should also facilitate the
development of a comprehensive four-year rolling operational plan
for the Telecommunication Development Sector.
The African
Regional Preparatory Meeting will take place at the Congress Hall,
Nicon Hilton, Abuja -
Nigeria from 3 to 7 July, 2005.
